Locals Impress at Nike Camps

Several local high school football players turned in impressive performances this weekend at the Long Beach Nike Camp (Saturday) and the USC Nike Camp (Sunday).

Corona running back Jordon James had the fastest 40-yard dash at the Long Beach camp, clocking in at 4.40 seconds. James had the second best SPARQ rating (113.22). James is one of the top backs in the West and already has several college offers.

Norco defensive back Joseph Smith had the top SPARQ rating in Long Beach (115.59). Two other locals cracked the top eight in the SPARQ rating: Roosevelt defensive back Max Ofoma (105.12) and King running back Todd Handley (104.58)

Rancho Verde defensive back Ryan Henderson had the top vertical (42 feet, 6 inches) and Miller receiver Trevor Pascoe had the top 20-yard shuttle time (3.83 seconds).

Rancho Verde's Ronald Powell was picked the defensive line MVP by coaches attending the event. Powell is the area's top-rated prospect on most recruiting Web site and he already has offers from 16 colleges, including USC, Florida, LSU and Notre Dame.

James was among the top running backs at the USC event, but the position MVP went to Scripps Ranch's Brennan Clay. Other top running backs, according to Scouts Inc.'s JC Shurburtt, were Kaiser's Anthony Brown, Citrus Hill's Deontae Cooper and North's Sedale Foster and Emery "E.J.' Schexnayder.

Corona's Demetrius Wright was among the top defensive backs at the camp. He already has offers from Arizona, Arizona State, Oregon, Oregon State, Tennesee and Washington.

Top receivers from the area were Upland's Kenny Lawler (just a freshman), Roosevelt's Tyler Slavin, Rancho Verde's Necho Beard and North's Dres Anderson.

Another defensive lineman who stood out was Kaiser's Josh Shirley, who is likely to switch to linebacker in college. Shirley's brother, Jason, plays for the Cincinnati Bengals.
